While virtually all of the constellations are named for mythological people, beasts and inanimate objects, Berenice's is actually the story of Queen Berenice's, an Egyptian Queen, wife of Ptolemy who reigned around 250 BC. The story goes that Berenice's sacrificed her beautiful amber tresses and placed them in the temple of Aphrodite as she vowed to do if her husband won victory and returned home alive. Shortly after the royal couple's happy reunion, however, the hair mysteriously vanished, apparently stolen from the temple. An astronomer adviser to the King pointed out a group of stars near Leo's tall and explained that Queen's hair had gone to join the stars.
