In 2007-2008, Colorado Ballet celebrates its 47th season of bringing world-class quality dance to Denver and to the state. As one of Colorado's oldest and most successful arts institutions, Colorado Ballet is the only organization of its size and stature to produce classical ballet in the state.
Colorado Ballet is a nationally recognized regional dance company which was conceived of a ballet school, founded in 1951 by Denver natives Freidann Parker and Lillian Covillo. To showcase their talented students, the life-long friends established Colorado Concert Ballet in 1961, which presented its very first production of THE NUTCRACKER at the Bonfils Theater in Denver to sell-out audiences.
The Academy of Colorado Ballet has two locations and continues to grow, possibly opening a third location in 2008.
Housed in a 6,000-square-foot facility that includes three studios in Douglas County, the Academy of Colorado Ballet South offers instruction by highly experienced faculty for children and adults in all forms of dance, including ballet, jazz, tap, modern and hip-hop. The South Academy also offers ballet performing groups, musical theater groups and a competing company called Spotlight Performers for 6-18 year-olds, which performs publicly and is available for bookings. Additionally, all academy students have the opportunity to perform in Colorado Ballet’s annual production of The Nutcracker.
The Central Academy of Colorado Ballet is lead by Michelle Dolighan-Rodenbeck who began as Director of the Academy of Colorado Ballet in July 2006.
“We offer students the highest quality dance education without the commitment of the professional program,” Dolighan-Rodenbeck, who performed as a principal dancer with Colorado Ballet for 12 years says, “We really do have something for everyone.”
The ballet programs at the Academy are based on the Vaganova method, the great Russian syllabus that has produced such dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rudolf Nureyev. Graduates of the Academy, like Dolighan-Rodenbeck herself, have gone on to dance professionally with Colorado Ballet and other companies worldwide. The Central Academy also provides classes in other areas of dance and is constantly updating the selections. Academy students of every level have the opportunity to perform in Colorado Ballet’s annual production of The Nutcracker.
In addition to regular dance classes, the Central Academy of Colorado Ballet has a performing and a competing company for dancers called Aspirations which performs publicly and is available for bookings.
Colorado Ballet has many talented instructors in all categories of dance-ballet, lyrical, tap, jazz, hip hop. Many great performance opportunities with performing groups and with the Colorado Ballet Company
Colorado Ballet is a CLASS ACT; their dance students are highly trained and very professional, and their productions continue to be top rate, year after year.
They do a phenomenal job teaching the girls not only the essentials of dancing, but also how to do it in a artful and pleasing manner. They are the best in Colorado, and that is why they should by on the A List!!
The dancers at Colorado Ballet are just amazing! One of their dancers "Dana" is so beautiful to watch. Very talented young lady! I love attending all their performances. For a fairly inexpensive night of entertainment, you cannot beat it!
