Featuring Denver's finest in independent film and foreign language cinema, the Mayan Theatre is located in the heart of Central Denver amongst a bevy of art galleries, restaurants and vintage clothing stores in the Baker District. The historic Mayan, built in 1930, narrowly missed the wrecking ball in the mid-1980s, when, at the eleventh hour, it was saved by the local group "Friends of the Mayan." In 1986, The Mayan was restored to its former glory. Renovated meticulously at a cost of nearly $2 million, it is one of the country's three remaining theatres designed in the Art Deco Mayan Revival style. It has been converted into a three-screen palace, with one large, magnificent auditorium and two cozy theatres upstairs, featuring stadium seating. There is also an upstairs cafe and seating area.
This antiquated theater could be charming, but unfortunately it’s a rundown piece of fecal matter. Tetanus shots should come standard with every ticket purchased. Just $9.75 will gain admittance to one of their films, with that comes the chance of being burned alive since this relic is a fire hazard. Parking? Nonexistent. What more could someone ask for??? I’ll see you at the Mayan =)
Ever since Mayor Pena saved this historic building from the wrecking ball, the Mayan has been a destination spot for all my out-of-town guests. It is a work of art that shows a great selection of indie films.
OMG this theater is sooooo awesome! It is old so it MUST be good!!!! I like how it is conveniently located and easy to get to from my house in Lakewood.!!! I wish the Mayan showed porn, though. The Esquire does, and nothing says "high class" like some 3D porn. I orgasm every time I go to this theater just because it is Landmark and I am supposed to like them if I am to be hip and trendy.
The ability to see a wide variety of independent films and foreign films - in a historic building appeals to my husband and I. Plus, the bar is a nice touch. (They also have some of the best popcorn in town!)
The environment is so unique. The space is really wonderful, with a great crowd of people, and always interesting movies, from sweet and hilarious to thought provoking. And along with your popcorn you can order a glass of wine or a beer with your movie!
